Children's Library

The Children's Library is for school children who live in the neighborhoods surrounding San Jose. More than 400 students have registered and visit the facility regularly to do homework, consult reference books, meet friends, and read stories.

A trained, full-time librarian oversees activities and guides children in their reading — a critical role in a country that ranks second-lowest in reading ability in all of Latin America.

During summer school vacation, the librarian runs Plan Lector — a creative reading encouragement program that keeps children engaged with books year-round and instills a love of learning that no classroom alone can build.

The library is a very successful project and continues to be used by so many students. The librarian is very creative — and again in the summer, during school vacation, she runs Plan Lector to encourage children to read. Peru has the second lowest reading ability in Latin America. — Sister Immaculata
